Location Information

Fort Collins, Colorado is a great little city with a solid arts scene, incredible dining, and myriad outdoor activity opportunities. We can offer you a bike to borrow and there are several hiking trails and bike paths within 3 miles of Kestrel Fields Studio. We are always glad to offer recommendations for the things we love about our hometown.

Kestrel Fields Studio & Art Residency is located in NW Fort Collins, in a quiet, residential neighborhood. The studio is adjacent to Kestrel Fields Natural Area, where you can take breaks from all that focus for fresh air, beauty, and wildlife.

The studio is on the 2nd floor of a carriage house (garage) and residents will need to be able to climb 17 stairs to access the studio. We are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible at this time.

The owners live on-site and are here to help settle you in or offer an extra hand. With a background in art and counseling, we provide conversation or advice as desired, field trips to art-y places in town, critique or ideas. Otherwise we leave you alone to work.

Parking is easy and free, with an off-street parking spot just for you, making it easy to load/unload. Come and go from the property as you please.

If you prefer to navigate Fort Collins without a car, we are an easy bus or bike ride into town, about 3.5 (flat) miles away. The bus stop is directly outside and provides free transportation to town every hour (6am-6pm).

Support & STructure

Create your perfect residency or retreat

Owner Heather Matthews is an artist and loves to engage with residents as they wish throughout their time at Kestrel Fields Studio. You will work together to design the exact retreat you're hoping for, whether it has some structure or leaves you completely to your own devices.

Ideas For Structure

  • Talking about art, whether in general or your art
  • Art critique, whether just with Heather or bringing in other artists to see your work
  • Art coaching--processing your goals out loud and outlining a plan for yourself
  • Field trips to local art events (and maybe a bakery?) while you're here
  • Networking/collaborating with other Northern Colorado artists
  • Creating a show or workshop, or simply opening the studio to the public for a couple hours while you're in-residence

Helpful to Know

Kestrel Fields Studio's residency program does not expect you to pump out a completed masterpiece by the end of your Colorado art residency, or ANY art for that matter. We respect that time and space away is yours to design yourself, and imperative to the art you make, even if it's just lots of resting and thinking time. That said, if you think structure can help you out, we're here to collaborate and offer some accountability.
