"ARTIST-WITH-A-CAPITAL-A" RESIDENCY PROGRAM

A funded fiber-art scholarship to help you finally feel like a real artist

Thanks to the generosity of friends and donors over the last two years, Kestrel Fields Studio & Art Residency is excited to announce an opportunity for fiber and textile artists who’ve been dabbling, experimenting, or quietly creating in the margins of their lives—people with original ideas and a deep desire to explore their own voice, but who’ve never had the space, time, or support to truly go "all in."

We’re offering six (6) fully-funded scholarships to help you step fully into your Artist identity—even if you’ve never called yourself an artist before. Additionally, there are six (6) partial scholarships so that we can share this unique opportunity with as many Artists as we can.

This residency is for you if…

  • You’ve played with fiber & textile art but want to move beyond patterns and into your own voice
  • You’re tired of putting your art last because of life’s other demands & priorities
  • You’re not sure you’re “good enough” for something like this, but a part of you hopes you are
  • You’re ready to feel like a real artist—even if you don’t finish a single piece

What you’ll receive as a fully-funded artist:

  • 1-week stay at our live/work residency space at no cost to you (value of $800), including overnight accommodation. Kestrel Fields Studio is a quiet, creative environment where you can focus fully on your work—no distractions, no expectations.
  • $100 cash stipend for food and travel expenses

Partial scholarship recipients receive:

  • 1-week stay at our live/work residency space for just $400 (a 50% savings from our regular price) including free overnight accommodation.

All scholarship recipients receive:

  • Up to $200 stipend for locally-sourced fiber supplies, so you can try new materials without additional financial stress.
  • Use of new products as provided by some of our sponsors (yarn, fabric, supplies and/or equipment)
  • Emotional support + gentle coaching—you’ll work independently, but you won’t be alone. You’ll have someone to talk with, process ideas with, and be seen by—without any judgment.
  • Opportunities for local art field trips, hosting open studio hours, or installing an exhibit, if desired (not required)
  • A space designed specifically for creative people, where fiber art is respected as "real" art. This residency is built by and for fiber artists. Your work matters here.

Important Details:

  • Only 6 full scholarships and 6 partial scholarships available--all applications will be considered for all scholarships
  • Applications close June 30, 2025. No exceptions.
  • Open to anyone working in yarn, thread, sewing, quilting, weaving, felting, embroidery,      garment making, and other textiles.
  • Some larger equipment can be provided for you to use while at Kestrel Fields Studio (i.e. 4 or 8-shaft floor or table loom, small copper tapestry loom, spinning wheel, carder, dye pots. Please let us know your specific needs in the application and we'll discuss).
  • There is a $15 application fee.

Our promise to you:

Our goal is simple: For you to leave this residency knowing—not just hoping—that you are an Artist. This is your space to become who you already are.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must:

  1.  Work primarily in fiber-based media
This includes (but isn’t limited to) sewing, quilting, weaving, felting, embroidery, yarn, garment making, or other textiles/fibers as you define

  2. Be 21 years of age or older

  3. Be in a stage of exploration or transition
This opportunity is for artists who are developing their voice, trying something new, or ready to claim their practice more fully.

  4. Never have been a funded artist-in-residence before
We want to prioritize those who haven’t had this kind of opportunity before.

  5. Demonstrate genuine interest & commitment
You don’t need a portfolio full of finished work—just a passion for your craft and a clear desire to grow.

  6. Be available for one of the designated residency sessions
Residency date preferences can be noted in the application and determined post-award in collaboration with recipients.

  7. Be willing to engage respectfully in community
While you’ll work independently, we will definitely engage with you on a regular basis. Kindness, openness, and respect are important values we share.
